What’s different about developing apps for enterprise vs. consumers?
While the fundamentals of building a great consumer app—simple, easy to use and relevant to the users— are transferable to enterprise apps, there are several difference you must consider when developing apps for internal use within a company including:
- Distribution: iTunes and Android Market vs. private internal Enterprise distribution. If you are building proprietary, customized apps, using iTunes or Android Market is not a feasible distribution option, since most enterprises don’t want these apps available to the general public, especially if it access sensitive internal or proprietary information.
- Version Management: Many Enterprises want to control how and when updates go out, perhaps rolling them out slowly. Public app stores cannot adequately support planned manage, or delayed update and version rollouts.
- Pricing and Licensing: Enterprise clients are open to different pricing & licensing models including bulk licensing, tiered and volume pricing and subscriptions. Developers need to have the tools to ensure accurate tracking of licenses and revenue.
- Security: Enterprises demand apps be secure including encryption of data storage and transmission, and user authentication, if company data is being used in the app. They will also need the ability to remotely lock, wipe, and disable.
- Reporting: Companies want to understand how their mobile apps are being used and to measure productivity of their employees. Developers will need to provide tracking capabilities including downloads, usage, versions, and other metrics.
